Scouting Report

Mid-major Division I players rarely find their way into the first round of the MLB Draft, but Tyler Bremner has flashed the upside and dependability of a mid-rotation pitcher. After his second season at UC Santa Barbara and an impressive showing with Team USA last summer, he entered 2025 as the widely-considered second-best college pitching prospect for the draft behind Florida State’s Jamie Arnold.

Featuring one of the best individual pitches in the draft, Bremner’s blend of projection and command makes him a clear starter at the next level. His mid-80s changeup is one of the best you’ll see and has been consistently given a 70-grade throughout the industry. His ability to utilize it against hitters on both sides of the plate is elite and has generated over a 40% whiff rate on the offering throughout the past two seasons.

His fastball, which sits in the mid-90s and touches 98, took a step back slightly in terms of its shape this past season but should still be a plus offering as he progresses. Meanwhile, the development of his upper-80s gyro slider will be a big key for him at the next level.

After posting a 2.54 ERA with 104 strikeouts across 88.2 innings split between starting and relieving as a sophomore in 2024, expectations were extremely high for Bremner this season. He got off to a slower start, which lowered his draft stock more into the mid-first round tier.

He finished the season with strong stretch of starts, ending the season with a 3.49 ERA and 111 strikeouts in 77.1 innings pitched across 14 starts. While he gave up runs in spurts at times, Bremner’s stuff and command (19 BB) shined still and will keep him well within the first round of the draft.

A repeatable and clean delivery along with feel for what could become three plus pitches makes Bremner a clear first rounder, who has had some helium of late. Peter Flaherty of Baseball America mentioned that his name will at least be on the table in the top five picks on a recent edition of the Round Up.

Why Would the White Sox Draft Tyler Bremner?

The organization seems to be trending towards prep hitters, the opposite of a college arm. This makes the fit of Bremner less likely, but his projection as a clear starter is where some of the intrigue stems from at this point.

If the top prep hitters are off the board, the White Sox could choose to go with an arm who they can envision moving quickly through the system and sticking as a legitimate starter. While Liam Doyle and Kyson Witherspoon are other names to watch if this approach is taken, but Bremner could be the safest of that trio.

The righty from UCSB doesn’t get premium extension on his pitches though and that has been a big point of emphasis for the White Sox and their pitching development staff under Brian Bannister. Keith Law of The Athletic has reported a link between the Pale Hose and Bremner despite those potential issues though.

Mock Draft Outcomes

In Mock Draft 2.0 by our James Fox, Bremner was projected 22nd to the Atlanta Braves. They have a reputation for taking pitchers with their first picks. On the flip side of the spectrum, Baseball American’s Staff Draft had Bremner being selected fifth overall to St. Louis. Kiley McDaniel was another one who projected him 22nd overall in ESPN’s Mock Draft 3.0 recently.

Draft

The Athletic recently published their Mock Draft 3.0 by Keith Law, which had Bremner going 11th to the Athletics. That feels like the more likely earlier range of outcomes, unless a team saves money by selecting him in the top 10 picks. Jim Callis published his latest MLB Pipeline mock last week in which Bremner went 14th to the Rays, a team known for getting the most out of unique arms.
