2021 FutureSox Draft Tracker

It’s almost back to normal for the MLB Draft. Even though this year’s draft is more than last year’s shortened five-round version, there’s are a couple new things. For one, there will be 20 rounds, which is less than the 40 of the past several non-COVID years. The date has shifted with the draft coinciding with the MLB All-Star Game.

We’re still going to cover it as much as possible at FutureSox with our annual Draft Tracker. This will be a one-stop shop for info on each White Sox selection. This tracker will be updated with signing bonus information as we get it.

The White Sox have $6,618,600 in bonus pool money to work with. The full list of slot values is available here. The White Sox spent $6,942,000.00 against their bonus pool. That includes an overage of $323,400.00. The club will pay a 75% overage tax on that additional 5% which equates to $242,550.00. They’re spending another $1,145,000.00 on day three.

Spending total on the 2021 Draft: $8,329,550.

1 (22): Colson Montgomery, SS, Bats: Left, Throws: Right, 6-foot-4, 190 pounds, Southridge HS (Ind.)

Slot value: $3,027,000

  • Status: Signed
  • Bonus: Slot Value ($3,027,000.00)
  • Assigned: Arizona Complex League
  • Signing Scout: Justin Wechsler

Montgomery is the first high school first-round pick for the White Sox since Courtney Hawkins in 2012. He had been connected to the White Sox for a long time, but it was a matter of whether or not he would fall to them at pick No. 22.

He is a tall shortstop who has drawn comparisons to Corey Seager. Both are 6-foot-4 and play the same position, but the comparison really only works defensively. He is a solid defender, but could have enough power to move to third if needed.

Seager is a solid all-around player who plays a premium position, but doesn’t have any plus-plus tools, although he could develop more power. He uses the whole field well with his left-handed swing.

1 thought on “2021 FutureSox Draft Tracker”

  1. I am assuming 4 and 6-10 are the cheap underslot deals, with 2 being overslot, and having to pay 3 and 5?
15 was the only other HS we selected I think.
I hope the White Sox scouts have identified these College Pitchers to find useful pieces like Bailey Horn and Avery Weems.
