Top of the Crop (Trending on the Farm)

NOTE: This piece will focus on players that are trending on the farm currently in the minor leagues. Nick Nastrini and Jonathan Cannon are omitted as they are now with the White Sox. The “Top of the Crop” portion was determined prior to the Dylan Cease trade, hence why Drew Thorpe, Samuel Zavala, and Jairo Iriarte are all omitted.

Edgar Quero

Edgar Quero’s scorching hot start to the 2024 season rolled on last week, as the 21 year old catcher was a force both at and behind the plate for the Barons against Mississippi. Quero had two extra base hits (double, home run), walked more (four) than he struck out (two), and in the four games he was behind the plate (made two appearances at DH last week), the Braves offense was held to just two runs scored. Through his first 14 games among qualified players, Quero is leading the Southern League in OPS (1.124), home runs (five), RBI (19), and is sixth in OBP (.426).

Noah Schultz

Noah Schultz had a rough beginning in his last start, walking the first two batters. A double saw both those runners come home, and the 20 year old lefty settled in after. Through the next three and two thirds scoreless innings, Schultz only allowed just one walk while striking out five of his six batters on the evening. So far through his first three starts (12 innings), Schultz has 23 strikeouts and an even 1.00 WHIP.

Jake Eder

25 year old Jake Eder started to get back on track in his most recent outing against Mississippi. While he still allowed too many baserunners (five hits, four walks), his eight strikeout performance is most definitely an encouraging sign.

Bryan Ramos & Colson Montgomery

Early season struggles continued for 22 year old Bryan Ramos, as he collected three hits on the week in five games played.

Colson Montgomery went hitless in the first three games of Charlotte’s series against Syracuse before sitting out the next two games on Friday and Saturday (Sunday was rained out).

Jacob Gonzalez

While the offensive output was down from last week, Jacob Gonzalez reached base safely in every game last week. That puts his current season on base streak at 14, and 35 if you go back to last season.

George Wolkow

18 year old George Wolkow cracks the Top of the Crop now with Nick Nastrini and Jonathan Cannon holding spots on the major league roster. The 2023 seventh round pick is in Arizona and will be a part of the ACL White Sox when their season begins on Monday, May 6.

Peyton Pallette & Tanner McDougal

Peyton Pallette had a tough start in Bowling Green. While the first two innings were relatively quiet (two baserunners, three strikeouts), the 22 year old faced some difficulties as he went through the order a second time. Three runs crossed the plate in the third inning, and a hit and walk chased him from the game in the fourth. Both runners came around to score on wild pitches later on in the inning.

21 year old Tanner McDougal endured some struggles in the early going of his start against the Hot Rods. McDougal allowed a couple walks and a hit in the first, but holding Bowling Green to just one run. The second inning was tougher on the right hander, as an error led to a prolonged inning and three runs eventually scoring.
