White Sox to Hire 30-year-old Matt Roffe from Brewers to Lead Amateur Scouting

The Chicago White Sox are hiring Matt Roffe from the Milwaukee Brewers to lead their amateur scouting operations, as first reported Thursday by Katie Woo and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
Roffe arrives from the newly crowned World Series champions, where he most recently served as assistant director of domestic scouting. He will fill the vacancy left by Mike Shirley, who resigned in September following an internal investigation.
The White Sox have not formally announced the hire or confirmed Roffe’s title. General manager Chris Getz previously indicated that the organization intended to hire a director of amateur acquisitions rather than fill the traditional scouting director position.
Who are the White Sox Getting?
Roffe spent five seasons with Milwaukee, progressing from coordinator to manager of scouting operations before earning his latest promotion in November 2025. His background also includes work in player evaluation and analytics with other organizations.
Before returning to Milwaukee in 2021, Roffe worked as an analyst in player personnel and professional scouting with the Arizona Diamondbacks from November 2019 through October 2021.
That stint provides an interesting connection to Chicago’s current front office. Roffe’s time in Arizona overlapped with White Sox assistant general manager Josh Barfield and director of acquisition Matt Grabowski. Barfield was Arizona’s director of player development, with Grabowski serving as his assistant.
While all three were members of the Diamondbacks’ organization during that period, the extent of their previous collaboration and whether those connections factored into Chicago’s hiring decision remain unknown.
Roffe also brings experience from a scouting operation that combines amateur and professional evaluation. Kyle Glaser of Baseball America reported last week that Milwaukee’s 31 domestic scouts carry professional scouting responsibilities alongside their amateur assignments.
That approach is worth watching as the White Sox continue reshaping their own player evaluation process under director of acquisition Matt Grabowski.
Roffe has already been connected to some of Milwaukee’s recent draft success. Joe Doyle of Over-Slot reported that Roffe strongly advocated for the Brewers to select Josh Adamczewski in the 2023 MLB Draft. Milwaukee landed the Indiana high school product in the 15th round, and he has since climbed to No. 85 on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 prospects list.
His name had also surfaced in FutureSox’ coverage before Thursday’s news. On Monday’s episode of The Au Jus, Ian Eskridge identified Roffe as a potential replacement for Shirley.
Another Outside Hire for Getz’s White Sox
The outside hire marks a departure from Chicago’s recent practice of promoting from within to lead amateur scouting. Getz declined to name an interim director following Shirley’s resignation and acknowledged that the organization had already been reviewing its player evaluation processes.
As FutureSox explored in September, that review raised questions about how amateur scouting might fit within the acquisition department and whether Grabowski could assume broader responsibilities in the process.
Roffe’s hiring fills a key vacancy in Chicago’s scouting department, but questions remain about how his role will fit into the organization’s broader acquisition structure under Getz. “We’re looking at a lot of different ways–we’ve been doing that for a while–not just a clear restructure, but a different way of doing business on that front,” Getz said in September. “If that means you’re going outside of the organization, so be it.”

Ultimately, Getz chose to pluck a 30-year-old from the World Series champions. A source reiterated to FutureSox that “blending analytics and projection based scouting” is a major strength in Roffe’s profile.
With preparations for the 2027 MLB Draft already underway, Roffe will be tasked with building on the talent Chicago has assembled in recent drafts while helping shape the next stage of the organization’s scouting operation.
FutureSox will continue updating this story as additional details become available.
